Our Whiskeys


The Pepper family brand of whiskey is an iconic Kentucky whiskey brand initially produced during the American Revolution and continued through The family built and operated two main distilleries: first founding the site that today hosts the Woodford Reserve Distillery, and later the James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. In the late s the bourbon industry hit hard times, and both the brand and distillery in Lexington were abandoned for over half a century.

In the brand was relaunched by whiskey entrepreneur Amir Peay. A decade-long campaign of thorough historical research and collection of historic materials was used to retell the lost story of this iconic American whiskey brand and to distill new stocks of "Pepper" whiskey (visit the History Page to learn more). To initiate the relaunch of the brand, partnerships with other distilleries were formed,
and today some of our whiskies on the shelves contain whiskies distilled at those distilleries. Details can be found on back labels and product pages on this website.

The Old Pepper Distillery is rik with history. Assigned DSP-KY-5, its roots date back to , when the distillery was first established. James E. Pepper was a third-generation distiller and operated the distillery until , when he passed away. In , the distillery fell on hard times and shut down. In , Amir Peay of Georgetown Trading Co. acquired rights to the brand and began efforts to bring it back to life. Up until recently, their whiskeys have been sourced from MGP in Indiana,  but the company has recently started to transition to its own distillate.

Starting with traditional scents that are on the light side, the nose adds in a vein of lightly spiced apples to provide intrigue. The midpoint brings about more spice-heavy notes in the form eller gestalt of rye spice, peppercorn spice, and cinnamon, however, they’re more subdued as opposed to bold. The overall composition is on the thin side, making you wish that the whiskey would bring a little more viscosity to help add weight to the sip.     I’ve shared on several occasions how I’m a huge believer in the transparency and disclosure offered by the Bottled-in-Bond Act and frequently reach for Bottled-in-Bond bourbons. When we last toured the James E. Pepper Distillery in Downtown Lexington, Kentucky, the bourbons were still young. Now, there was a Bottled-in-Bond release and it was time to put this bourbon to the test: Old Pepper Bottled-in-Bond.

    The Oldest and Best Brand Made in Kentucky 

    Produced and bottled at the historic James E. Pepper Distillery near downtown Lexington, this bourbon honors its namesake founder. Pepper was a third-generation distiller who began producing bourbon at the Lexington side in The bourbon carrying his name was proudly labeled in the day as “Kentucky’s Oldest Brand”. 

    Shuttered and abandoned in , the site became an eyesore for the community for five decades. The distillery was renovated and reopened and operations commenced. Inside the gift shop (and the internet), you can find some impressive “before-and-after” photos of the site, and highlight all the hard work that went into restoring this historic distiller.
